Common questions
In-person or online?+
Both. In-person within the metro area; online over video with a shared whiteboard for everyone else. Results track the same either way.
What's your background?+
An M.Ed. plus ten years of classroom teaching in high-school maths and sciences, and a full teaching credential. Tutoring privately since 2019.
How do I know if it's working?+
Quarterly progress reports and grade tracking against goals we set at the start. If it isn't working, the report says so and we change the plan.
What if the standard rate is out of reach?+
Sliding-scale spots are reserved for families who need them. Mention it at the consult — no questions, no judgement.
Do parents sit in?+
For the first session, if the student wants that. After it, usually not — most students say more when a parent is not in the room, and the written report tells you everything anyway.
My child says they do not need help.+
Common, and often half true. The consult is thirty free minutes with them in the room rather than about them, which is usually where the resistance goes.
Will you do their homework with them?+
Not for them. We use their real assignments as the material, because that is what is in front of them — but the point is that next week they can do it without me.
What about a diagnosed learning difference?+
Welcome, and please say so at the consult with any report you have. I teach to accommodations rather than around them, and I will tell you honestly if a specialist would serve you better than I would.
One good semester changes the story.
